Hi there Mark,
I’m a hypnotherapist based up in Sheffield. I’m just starting to think about recording my own hypnosis CDs and have been looking on the net for some advice about the best recording equipment or programmes to use. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be much info out there.
Do you have any advice?

In response to Johleen – I don’t think Mark is going to tell you the best way to record CDs because that is what he does
. Anyways to record your own hypnosis CD ECONOMICALLY you should get:
1 x Computer (probably already have)
1 x Good Audio Sound Card – I find MAudio’s range to be good for the price – you only need 2 inputs
1 x Microphone – I find Shure SM58 good for the price
1 x Computer recording editing program – I find CoolEdit Pro good for the price – although Adobe now took this over so I don’t think it free anymore but you may find an old copy
1 x Little 4 track mixer to boost your mic signal and get good levels to connect to your audio card – Yamaha are good for the price
If you have a computer then all this should cost max $1000 if you shop around
Get a quiet room, put your computer in it and set it all up. Try to find another close room nearby to set up your mic so you have less background noise from computer etc.. Press play and start recording. If you make a mistake just keep going and edit it all out later. Find some tutorial on the web about how to make binaural, isochronic or monaural background tracks with CoolEdit for the background sound – or find some other royalty free music. Mix it all together – add a bit of compression and reverb on to your voice and away you go. You don’t need all this wizz bang equipment for hypnosis recordings because often the small distractions of small sound imperfections can assist the hypnotic state because it distracts the conscious mind more. If you want it to sound really good play with the editing and compression and noise reduction settings in CoolEdit.
If you want you can layer subliminal messages underneath the recording – just record on a separate track some short and sharp 2 to 6 word positive statements congruent with your CD title – about 10 will do – and just loop them continuously throughout the recording at a very very low volume (crank the speakers to full ball and you should only just be able to hear them)
